The Faculty of Arts of
the University of Cape Coast is organizing a series of colloquia to pool
intellectual resources that will contribute immensely to knowledge and policy
formulation related to the disciplines of communication, culture and health. It
will bring together researchers, academics and experts from the Humanities,
Medical Sciences, and allied disciplines to disseminate their research
findings, share knowledge and contribute to the development of healthcare
provision in Ghana and other cultural contexts.
The issue of health has mostly been discussed at
forums where the dominant disciplines have been the Sciences. When the
individual thinks about health, it is almost always related to medicine.
However, it is worthy to note that health is closely related to the Humanities
because individuals live in cultures and communicate in varied modes. Apart from
orthodox medicine and health-related communication and projects, there are also
indigenous philosophies that inform non-traditional healthcare. The study of
issues related to the culture of the people is best researched in the
Humanities. It is therefore instructional that researchers in the Humanities
engage in projects and research that will bring together the cultures of the
people and healthcare in order to inform the people.
This Colloquium will draw the attention of
researchers and healthcare providers to the needs of the people regarding communication
of health needs and provision of healthcare. It is very important for the
nation to achieve the Millennium Development Goals Numbers 4, 5, 6 but it will
be challenging for the nation if healthcare provision is not related to the
cultures of the people. That is why this Colloquium could be seen as important
and relevant to the achievement of the development goals of the country.
